ELMHURST, IL — Two U.S. mailboxes were broken into in Elmhurst Monday morning.

Around 7 a.m., a citizen told police they noticed a mailbox with its door ajar at the intersection of First and Haven streets.

Police believe the mailbox was opened with an unknown type of prying tool.

Elmhurst police then went to check abandoned mailboxes in the village and found a second mailbox broken into on Cottage Hill Avenue, between Park Avenue and Adelaide Street.

Mail placed in those two mailboxes between 4 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Monday may have been stolen, police said.

The Elmhurst Police Department is asking anyone who placed a financial document or registered with these particular mailboxes during the break-in to cancel the document or place a fraud alert on their accounts at their financial institutions.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 630-530-3050.
