Madison, Wisconsin (AP) – On Sunday, investigators investigated a fire at the headquarters of the anti-abortion group Wisconsin Family Action, where someone spray-painted a message outside the building.
Madison Police Spokeswoman Stephanie Fryer said The Wisconsin State Journal said the fire, which was reported shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday in Madison, was suspicious. No one was injured, and officials are still working to determine how much damage the fire caused.
It was not immediately clear who damaged the building, but the inscription “If abortion is not safe, then you are not safe” was put on the building.
Lobby group president Julia Upling said she considered the fire a “direct threat against us”, given that it happened just days after a draft U.S. Supreme Court ruling was found, which suggests the court may soon overturn Roe v. . Wade’s decision that legalized abortion in this country. She said people could have suffered if they had worked in the office at the time.
“It’s a local manifestation of anger and a lack of tolerance on the part of abortionists for those of us who advocate for life,” Epling said.
Wisconsin politicians, including Democratic Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, quickly criticized the vandalism on Sunday.
“This attack is disgusting and should be condemned by all,” said Republican Sen. Ron Johnson.
Democratic Senate nominee Tom Nelson also condemned the vandalism.
“I’m committed to protecting women’s rights, but we have to do it right,” Nelson said. “Violence and destruction are not the answer. I am glad that no one was hurt. “
