A Republican is dropping his Cook County Council race
Despite their efforts to change this, local republicans fell further “super-duper” minority status in Cook County government conceded defeat on Monday as the only Republican candidate still in the race for a seat on the County Council. His defeat turns a seat that had been red for a quarter of a century blue and leaves the Cook County GOP chairman as the only Republican on the council.
It was the latest in a string of Republican losses in Illinois since last week’s general election, leaving the state party is faltering. Similar rates to return county positions from the Democrats also failed on Tuesday.
In a Facebook post From his campaign account Monday afternoon, pollster and logistics manager Matt Podgorski, the Republican candidate for Cook County Council District 9, said that despite his lead in the race by less than 200 votes, it is “almost a statistical certainty” that he will fall behind because “Democrats are winning about 75% of the mail-in vote.”
“Although I am disappointed with the results, I am very grateful to all my friends and acquaintances over the past 12 months,” he said in a statement. “Voters chose their precinct officer. I support their choice and will do everything possible to help our elected officials successfully serve the public interest.”
His opponent, Democrat Maggie Trevor, led Tuesday afternoon by about 500 votes. Podhorski conceded defeat to the Tribune on Tuesday.
Unofficial election results show Podhorski winning close to his political base: Chicago’s Northwest Side, where he is the head of a local Republican organization. There are many city police and fire departments in the area. While the Northwestern Republicans to a large extent were By endorsing former President Donald Trump, Podgorski’s campaign tried to appeal to more moderate voters: He touted his support for labor unions and the Workers’ Rights Amendment and did not discuss abortion in the investigation, focusing instead on crime.
According to unofficial reports, Trevor, a market researcher, beat him in the suburbs that make up the bulk of the district. She has received significant help from the Cook County Democratic Party and has worked on expanding abortion services at county clinics, gun control and hyper-local issues such as transportation.
Podgorski’s apparent defeat leaves Sean Morrison as the only Republican on the 17-member board that oversees the county’s courts, jail and hospital system and its nearly $9 billion budget.
Two other Democrats seen as vulnerable, Scott Britton and Kevin Morrison, also fended off Republican challengers.
Democrats also filled vacant county council seats: Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Josina Morita to replace retiring County Council Commissioner Larry Suffredino; Anthony Joel Quezada, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated Commissioner Luis Arroyo in the primary and ran unopposed last week; Monica Gordon also won the race to replace outgoing Commissioner Deborah Sims.
