WASHINGTON (AP) – A Navy Special Forces sailor died Monday from injuries sustained late last week during an exercise at the Little Creek-Fort Story Joint Expeditionary Base in Virginia, the Navy said Tuesday.
The Navy said the sailor was injured after a helicopter landing incident on Thursday.
According to a Navy spokesman, the helicopter landed hard near a sailor who was on the ground, not on a plane. The official, who said on condition of anonymity to disclose details not yet released, said the injured soldier was a combat support sailor, not a fur seal.
The sailor was taken to hospital for injuries but died Monday afternoon. The sailor’s name is not withheld until 24 hours after the completion of the notification to close relatives in accordance with Navy policy.
The cause of the accident is being clarified.
