Amid a lawsuit over the student’s death, the Latin School sued the insurance company

CHICAGO — Chicago Latin School — a prestigious school in the Gold Coast area — is suing Liberty Mutual, claiming the insurance company won’t fully pay for lawyers defending the school in a separate lawsuit filed earlier this year by the parents of a student who graduated life is suicide.

Earlier this week, Latin filed a lawsuit against Liberty Mutual in U.S. District Court, alleging that “Liberty has refused to pay the full cost of Latin’s legal fees, instead claiming that Liberty is responsible for paying Latin’s legal fees only to the extent that Latin’s attorney charged rates equal to or below those of Liberty attorneys.”

Latin also claimed that “the amount in dispute is in excess of $75,000.”

The legal fees are the result of a lawsuit filed against Latin six months ago by the parents of Nathan Bronstein, a 15-year-old Latin student who took his own life in January. His parents claim he only took his own life after being bullied and “regularly tormented” by other Latin students. School administrators were aware of their son’s treatment by other students but still failed to address the problem, Bronstein’s parents claim in their lawsuit.

Also named as defendants were six Latin employees, including the school’s principal, and the parents of five Latin students. The parents of these students work as a managing director of a private equity firm, a real estate investor, a CFO of a business consulting firm, a CEO of a global airline, and a wealth manager.

According to the school, Latin tuition ranges from $36,000 per year for prekindergarten through fourth grade and $41,000 per year for fifth through twelfth grade. Forum, Latin’s student newspaper, previously reported that the school took in more than $40 million in tuition in 2019.

The case, brought by the Bronstein family, is still pending in Cook County Circuit Court, and the defendants have moved to dismiss the lawsuit.

Representatives for Liberty Mutual and Latin School declined to comment on Latin’s new statement. A lawyer for the Bronstein family did not respond to a request for comment.
