KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have hired Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro as their new manager, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Sunday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the club has yet to announce the move.
Cuatraro replaces Mike Matheny, who was fired in a major shakeup in the organization after finishing with a 65-97 record in his sixth straight losing season. Cuatraro was selected by Royals general manager JJ Piccola, who took over as the club’s head of baseball operations following the firing of longtime front office executive Dayton Moore.
Piccola, along with Royals owner John Sherman, said they needed a visionary manager who was more data-driven than in the past. They got just that from Cuatraro, 48, who has been Tampa Bay’s bullpen coach since 2018 and has also served as hitting coordinator and third base coach. He previously worked on manager Terry Francona’s staff in Cleveland.
He has been a hot commodity in recent seasons, interviewing with the Mets and A’s last season for the manager position.
