Bridge collapse in India: At least 32 dead

NEW DELHI — At least 32 people were killed and several injured after a cable-stayed bridge collapsed into a river in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Sunday evening, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Local media reported that hundreds of people rushed into the Macchu River when a bridge collapsed in Morbi district of the state. It is not yet known how many people were on the bridge.

The accident happened just days after the 19th-century colonial-era bridge reopened to the public following renovations. Officials told PTI that the bridge gave way as it could not support the number of people on it.

“Several people fell into the river due to the collapse of the bridge. A rescue operation is underway,” said State Minister Brieš Merja. “Several people are reported to have been injured. They are urgently taken to the hospital.”

Videos on social media showed people clinging to a partially submerged bridge in distress, while another showed people swimming to safety.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with three national disaster response teams on the scene, local media reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is visiting his home state of Gujarat, said he was “deeply saddened by the tragedy”. His office announced compensation to the families of the dead and called for quick rescue action.
