Dan Brady loses to Alexi Giannoulias in Illinois Secretary of State race | Main stories

(NBC CHICAGO) – Former Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias appears to have won statewide office for the second time, defeating Republican Dan Brady in a tight race to become the new secretary of state.

Brady acknowledged the race in a phone call with Giannoulias on Tuesday night, according to a press release from his campaign.

Giannoulias has yet to declare victory, and neither NBC News nor the Associated Press has yet declared the race.

“Tonight begins a new chapter in my public life,” Brady said during his acceptance speech. “I just called my opponent Alexi Giannoulias and congratulated him.”

Giannoulias, who served one term as treasurer before losing the 2010 U.S. Senate race against Republican Mark Kirk, will replace Jesse White next year as White retires after a 24-year career in office.

Giannoulias most recently worked in finance as an executive director at BNY Mellon Wealth Management. He also serves on the Chicago Public Library Board, a position he assumed in 2018.

During his tenure as treasurer, he encountered controversy with The Bright Start College Savings Program is experiencing significant financial losses during his tenure in the wake of the Great Recession of 2008, Giannoulias was also criticized for loans issued Broadway Bank, which was founded by his father.

During the campaignGiannoulias has pushed for new ethics laws in the secretary of state’s office and has promised to modernize the office while improving services such as libraries, infrastructure spending and fighting climate change.

He also vowed to protect voting rights, saying laws passed by conservative-dominated legislatures hinder access to voting in Republican states.

Brady, the deputy House minority leader in Springfield, represented 105thousand since 2013 and has served in the House of Representatives since 2001. His district covers parts of Bloomington and Normal.

The Republican ran on a platform which emphasizes streamlining the services offered by the Secretary of State’s office, using mobile locations to provide services directly to customers while easing lines and hassles at DMV offices across the state.

He also promised to lower the minimum age for the state’s organ and tissue donation program from 18 to 16 and said he wanted to provide better driver’s education for young people.

Ultimately, Brady followed through on a promise to allocate additional funds to local libraries to provide educational resources to residents of all ages.
