MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — The death toll from twin car bombings in Somalia’s capital has reached 120 and could rise as some people are still missing, the country’s health minister said Monday.

Ali Haji said more than 320 people were injured in Saturday’s midday blasts at a busy intersection in Mogadishu, and more than 150 of them were still being treated in hospitals.

It was the deadliest attack in Somalia since a truck bomb in the same spot killed more than 500 people five years ago. It is not clear how the explosives-laden vehicles once again drove through the city, which is full of checkpoints and constantly on the alert for attacks.

Al-Qaeda’s al-Shabaab group claimed responsibility for the blasts and said the target was the education ministry, which it accused of turning young people away from Islam.

Somalia’s government, led by newly elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is waging a new offensive against al-Shabaab, including efforts to shut down its financial network. The government has said that the fight will continue.
