Ex-president Donald Trump announces the election in 2024
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Many people have wondered since the last election whether former President Donald Trump would run for president again. Now we have the answer.
“To make America great and glorious again, tonight I am announcing my candidacy for President of the United States,” Trump told a crowd at the Mar-A-Lago resort.
“America’s comeback starts right now,” Trump said.
The announcement comes a week after many of the candidates he supported lost in the midterm elections, but that hasn’t stopped some Republicans from offering their support.
“I support President Trump 1,000%,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.).
“President Trump, he excites people, he energizes our base and increases voter turnout,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-Ga.).
But for many Democrats, this is not good news at all.
“He is unfit to be president,” said Sen. Sherrod Brown (R-Ohio).
Brown and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) say midterm results show a majority of Americans want to bypass Trump.
“The reason Republicans haven’t done as well as they thought they did is because of Donald Trump,” Brown said.
“The GOP’s so-called red wave has turned into a red wedding,” Jeffries said. “Here’s the answer from the Republicans, the leader of the sect should run again.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fl.) is the man some are calling to challenge Trump for the GOP nomination. Earlier on Tuesday, he brushed off recent attacks from the former president.
“When you do, you lead, when you do things, yeah, you take incoming fire, that’s just the nature of it,” DeSantis said.
While Trump has announced his own candidacy, he has not mentioned a possible running mate.
