‘Gone in less than 5 seconds’: Creswood police warn of repeated gas station thefts

CRESTWOOD, Ill. — Thieves have targeted people at gas stations in south suburban Creswood in recent weeks, according to police.

The video released by the authorities shows one crime. According to police, the victim is pumping gas when the suspects pull up, usually in a stolen car.

One gets out, opens the victim’s unlocked passenger door and grabs the victim’s purse, cell phone or other valuables. The suspects then drive off in a stolen vehicle before anyone realizes what happened.

Police say the thefts happen in less than five seconds.

Creswood authorities used the incident to remind local residents to turn off their vehicles and lock their cars while refueling. Police are also asking petrol pump operators to be vigilant.

Investigations into the incidents are ongoing.
