SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – Governor J. B. Pritzker has issued a disaster declaration that unlocks resources for tornado-damaged areas across the state.
on saturday Governor Pritzker has issued a disaster declaration to provide immediate relief and public safety support for Illinois communities affected by Friday night’s tornadoes and severe weather.
The disaster declaration includes Boone, Crawford, DuPage, Marion and Sangamon counties.
The Governor also directs the Illinois State Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) to coordinate a robust statewide response and recovery effort that includes multiple state agencies, public safety organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
“The devastating storms that swept across our state last night turned communities upside down and resulted in trauma and loss of life,” – said the governor J. B. Pritzker. “In response, I am declaring a state of emergency to provide all necessary assistance to our communities immediately. I am in close contact with the Illinois State Emergency Management Agency and local partners across the state to ensure that all possible resources are provided to those affected or displaced. I am deeply grateful to the first responders and emergency officials who worked through the night and will continue to work tirelessly in the days and weeks ahead to help those affected.”
The disaster declaration, which takes effect immediately, will support local government response and recovery operations if necessary. While the response continues, Illinois residents are encouraged to continue to monitor local authorities to stay abreast of the latest conditions in their communities.
The disaster declaration may be updated to include additional counties as damage assessments continue.
