More and more people around the world, and especially in Chicago, are tired of strong chemical cleaners that are not only harmful to your hands, but also not ideal for the environment. Combined with (almost exclusively) the plastic packaging in which they come, these products are viewed less favorably.
Fortunately, we are beginning to remember the cleaning solutions of our grandparents who did not have the convenience of serial industrial cleaners. These cleaning solutions may not always be the strongest, but they are definitely enough to meet most of your cleaning needs.
To learn more about them, we talked cleaning specialists at Castle Keepers Greenville, whose experience with green cleaning makes them the perfect people to ask.
Have you ever wondered what is included in the window cleaner? That’s the discovery – it’s mostly water with a small amount alcohol, a little dye and a pleasant aroma that you associate with purity. And that’s it. No wonder if you think about what it is used for – cleaning hyper-smooth surfaces from very little dirt.
This makes it an ideal starting home cleaner. The best way to deliver window cleaner is a spray bottle, so you can mix the product directly into one. Take alcohol, a little white vinegar and water. Vinegar is optional, but it helps. If you are not a fan of the smell of alcohol or vinegar, add a few essential oils or other flavors, and you’re done.
Pour about 2 cups of water with half a cup of alcohol (and half a cup of vinegar if you want to use it) and stir until mixed properly. And you bought yourself a window washer.
If you’ve never used all-purpose cleaners, you should definitely give them a try. They are great for a variety of applications, from washing the floor to wiping furniture and removing stains. They are at the perfect intersection between being strong enough to handle just about any stain that can occur under normal use, and not being too abrasive and not damaging the surfaces you clean.
However, store-bought options may not be ideal for the environment. So if you’re looking for an alternative to an industrial cleaner or you’ve run out of it and you need to make it yourself, here’s how. And you only need items that you probably already have in your home.
Mix a glass of water with the same amount of vinegar and drip something fragrant to neutralize the smell of vinegar. The scent of citrus and pine works very well, but if you have other scents that you like, be sure to try them.
Combining and activating this cleaner can take several days, but once that happens, it can be used for a variety of cleaning purposes. Just make sure you don’t apply it to the stone – the abrasive nature of acetic acid can damage stone surfaces, especially if they are made of granite.
If, however, you find that you need a more powerful cleanser, just remember that you don’t need to go for industrial things. It may take a little effort and time, but green detergents are available even for solid stains.
The storm used to be a very common cleaner, and many people still have it in their homes – and for good reason. When mixed with a little lemon the borax can really dissolve stubborn stains if left for about 5 minutes. If the first reception has not removed all stains, rinse and repeat.
Green cleaning solutions are all around us and they are likely to become even more popular and important in the future. Try them and see if they work for you.
