How to save money on your electric bill in cold weather | Main stories

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. (WAND) – As the warm weather winds down, people are turning on the heaters to stay warm inside.

Electricians gave people tips to stay warm while saving money. Business manager Jarrett Klemm of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) said there are many ways to stay warm while saving money.

“For less savings, be sure to switch to LED lights or at least to compact fluorescent lamps. We’re seeing a lot of homes that still have traditional incandescents, and they’re woefully inadequate compared to the new technology,” Clem said.

Another way to save money is to check your furnace filters. These filters help push warmer air out.

“A clogged filter makes it harder to push air through and therefore uses more energy and money to run, so checking your furnace filters is a great way to save a few dollars over the winter,” Clem explained.

According to IBEW, many people have started using smarter technology to heat their homes. Smart thermostats allow people to change the temperature in certain areas of the house when they are not there.

“Some of the smarter thermostats are better and you can set different zones so that in areas of the house where you’re not, you can also lower the temperature. Even in our own homes, we sometimes lock the doors in the basements and close the dampers in places we’re not in so we can try to save a little bit,” Clem said.

Another way to keep warm is to simply close the door in the house to keep out the cold weather.
