Illinois State Police are investigating a shooting on Interstate 64
The Illinois State Police is investigating a report of shots fired from one vehicle at another Saturday afternoon on Interstate 64 in Fairview Heights.
Bullets hit a second vehicle, but no one was injured, according to Jamie Buford, the agency’s public information officer, when contacted Sunday.
The shooting happened around 12:18 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Interstate 64 and Illinois 159, north of St. Clair Square shopping center.
“They were exiting I-64 west of Illinois 159,” Buford said of the shooter’s vehicle. “They were pulling another car alongside and that’s when they discharged their weapons.”
The Fairview Heights Police The department’s duty sergeant Sunday referred calls to administrators, who were not expected back in the office until Monday. The department’s Facebook page did not mention the shooting.
Several commenters on social media described a traffic jam on Interstate 64 around the same time as the shooting, but Buford said it was likely unrelated because the occupants of the car that was hit didn’t report it until they left the highway.
“The investigation is still open and ongoing and no additional information is available at this time,” Buford said.
