Police: Mall of America closed after report of shooting


BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — The Mall of America was closed Friday night after a shooting, mall officials and police in suburban Minneapolis said.

The Bloomington Police Department tweeted shortly after 8:15 p.m. that police and EMS crews were on the scene of a shooting at the mall. The lockdown lasted about an hour before the mall tweeted that shoppers were being sent outside.

Police did not immediately say whether anyone was injured or arrested.

Videos posted on social media showed shoppers hiding in stores, while a sign in the mall warned people to take shelter. Some videos show shoppers running for shelter after a loud bang was heard. The shooting comes as U.S. shopping and malls see an influx of customers in the days leading up to Christmas.

Ambulances converged on the snow-covered parking lot, and police officers were able to put up yellow tape at the crime scene outside the Nordstrom store.

The Mall of America asked shoppers to stay in the “nearest safe place.”

Since opening in 1992, the mall has become the largest in the United States and is a tourist destination and community gathering place. It bans guns on the premises but does not have metal detectors at the entrance.

The mall was closed in August after a shooting was reported at the mall in suburban Minneapolis, sending some shoppers scrambling for cover and injuring two people. New Year’s Eve during an apparent altercation.

Representatives for the city of Bloomington and the Mall of America did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
