TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Nestlé Purina PetCare has expanded its recall of a prescription dog food that can cause vomiting and kidney failure in dogs.

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) is a prescription dry dog food that has been recalled due to “potentially elevated vitamin D levels.”

According to the Food and Drug Administration, a supplier error resulted in potentially elevated nutrient levels in two additional batches of product. The batches predate the production dates of the previously recalled lots. The initial recall was announced on February 8.

The FDA states that vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, but ingestion of elevated levels can lead to health problems depending on the level and timing of exposure, including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive salivation to the kidney ( renal) dysfunction.

The FDA reported that the affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics and other retailers with the ability to verify the prescription.

Affected lots of dog food include lot numbers 2213 1082 and 2214 1082, UPC code #38100 19190 (8-pound bags) and 38100 19192 (20-pound bags).

No other Purina pet care products are involved in the recall.

Pet owners who have purchased bags of the damaged product are asked to immediately stop feeding it to their pet and dispose of it in a container where other animals, including wild animals, cannot reach it.
