A 59-year-old security guard was shot and killed during a bank robbery in Lupa Thursday afternoon, Chicago police said.

An “unknown offender” was leaving the Fifth Third Bank branch at 1 S. Wacker Dr. around 3 p.m., when the security guard confronted the armed robber and was shot in the arm, police said.

The security guard returned fire, and the robber fled east on Madison Street.

Police said a 59-year-old man suffered a stab wound and refused to be taken to hospital.

The robber, who remained at large Thursday night, was described as a black man, about 5-foot-7, medium build, wearing a black hooded jacket, mask, winter gloves and blue jeans, according to FBI spokeswoman Natalie Symonds.

There were no other injuries and the guard had the proper paperwork for the gun, police said.

FBI agents were on the scene, spokesman Symonds said.
