‘SNL’ writers to ‘boycott’ Dave Chappelle’s return as host
(NewsNation) — Dave Chappelle’s anticipated appearance as host of Saturday Night Live this weekend is causing some excitement as many of the show’s writers are protesting his appearance.
Some writers plan to shelve Chappelle’s episode because of a recent spate of comedians calling them “transphobic and homophobic jokes.” according to a report from Page Six.
“They’re not going to put on a show. But none of the actors are boycotting,” an insider told Page Six.
Chappelle was at 30 Rock on Tuesday for a meeting with writers and producers, and his rep told Page Six, “There was no evidence of a boycott.”
“The hall was full of writers. They all pitched ideas and seemed to be excited about it. … Dave wants to have fun,” his rep said.
“SNL” announced last week that the “Chappelle Show” star will host the show with musical guest Black Star on November 12. This will be his third time as host, Variety reported.
After the announcement, “SNL” writer Celeste Yim reportedly posted a photo on Instagram Stories and wrote, “I’m trans and non-binary. I use they/their pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it must be condemned,” he said This is reported by the Daily Mail.
Although Yim did not directly mention Chappelle, the Times suggested that their message was a criticism of Chappelle being chosen as host.
Chappelle previously received backlash from the LGBTQ+ community following his Netflix special “The Closer,” which angered some viewers because some of the jokes were aimed at the trans community.
