A Chicago Fire Department spokesman said three children were taken to the hospital Thursday morning because of the stench, and 13 children were treated at the scene.

At about 10:15 a.m., EMS was called to Fairfield Elementary, located at 6201 S. Fairfield Ave., after a foul-smelling spray was sprayed into the air on the playground, spokesman Larry Langford said.

At least one child, who has asthma, along with two others, were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in fair to serious condition, Langford said.

Officials previously believed it was a fight and that pepper spray was used. But Langford said there was no fight, just a strong odor when officials got to the scene.
