DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Memorial Day weekend is coming in 2023. Summer fun means lots of sun and an increased risk of skin cancer.
Heather Maki, senior director of cancer prevention and early detection, works for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. She says people should get regular skin screenings at least once a year.
Maki says a recent survey shows that 70% of Americans over the age of 21 have not been screened for skin cancer for a number of reasons. First, they didn’t know they needed to be tested. Second, they showed no signs or symptoms. 3) They couldn’t afford the cost of skin screening, so they didn’t do it.
She went on to say that skin cancer does not discriminate and people of any skin color can get cancer.
