SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — A resolution headed for a vote in the Illinois House of Representatives would call on the U.S. government to provide SNAP benefits to all foster families in Illinois, regardless of income.
About 16% of all Illinois residents benefit from food assistance programs such as SNAP, the sixth highest in the nation. Central square reports.
Last year, the federal government paid Illinois $5.6 billion in SNAP benefits.
Representative Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) introduced Resolution of the House of Representatives 75 to the Adoption and Child Welfare Committee on Tuesday.
“We’re losing a lot of foster parents because they can’t get SNAP if they don’t qualify, not to mention these kids they’re fostering,” she said.
However, Rep. Stephen Rike (R-Woodstock) argued that even millionaires would be eligible for benefits if the federal government agreed to the plan.
“Giving him an open-ended qualification or eligibility regardless of income, I think, is going too far,” Rike said.
