WASHINGTON (AP) – Managers of contract vaccine maker Emergent BioSolutions have covered up quality control problems that have led to more than 400 million doses of coronavirus vaccines having to be thrown away, according to a report by Congressional investigators on Tuesday.

According to a report by a House committee, the number of doses destroyed was much higher than previously thought, and senior officials had warned for years that its quality systems were in short supply.

“Despite the serious red flags at the vaccine plant, Emergent executives have swept these issues under the rug and continued to rake in taxpayer dollars,” said spokeswoman Carolyn Maloney, DN.Y.

The report says that inexperienced staff and high staff turnover have contributed to the vaccine infection.

The problem factory in Baltimore was closed by the Food and Drug Administration in April 2021 due to pollution. The company was forced to throw in the trash what was considered equivalent to the tens of millions of doses of vaccine it produced for Johnson & Johnson. The mass vaccine was contaminated with an ingredient for AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, which was manufactured at the same factory.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration allowed Emergent to resume production of the COVID-19 vaccine in August 2021. Emergent received $ 330 million in taxpayers before the federal government terminated the contract in November, the report said.

Emergent CEO Robert G. Kramer apologized for the “failure of our control” and blamed the factory’s problems for the difficulty of rapidly increasing production of two different vaccines.
