But the visual is far from real. The images – and the many variations that littered social media – were created using increasingly sophisticated and widely available image generators based on artificial intelligence.

Amid heightened concerns about extremism and hate crimes across the U.S., Illinois officials said they have allocated $20 million in grants to synagogues, mosques and other religious and cultural institutions “considered to be at high risk of a terrorist attack.”
