The victim of a football player’s knife attack was discharged from the hospital WGN 720 Radio

MILAN (AP) — Soccer player Pablo Mari was released from the hospital Sunday, three days after being injured in a knife attack at an Italian shopping mall.

On Thursday, five people were stabbed, including Marie, and one died after a man grabbed a knife from a supermarket shelf. Police arrested a 46-year-old Italian man suspected of an attack in a shopping center in Assago, a suburb of Milan.

Marie, 29, who is on loan at Serie A club Monza from Arsenal, escaped life-threatening injuries but required back surgery and also suffered injuries to his mouth. He will be sidelined for two to three months.

Monza issued a statement on Sunday saying the Spanish player had been discharged from hospital but would need a “period of complete rest”.

The club also said the players will warm up for Monday’s match at home to Bologna wearing special shirts dedicated to María, with his name on the back and a message on the front that reads “come back soon Pablo”.

There will also be a minute’s silence before kick-off in memory of Luis Fernando Ruggieri, the supermarket worker who died in the attack.

The Italian champion rejected Monza’s request to postpone the match.

“This week was very special, very emotional. When we found out about Pablo, it was normal that it shocked everyone. We were very depressed,” said Monza coach Raffaele Paladino. “But when we found Pablo out of danger, we all breathed a sigh of relief.

“It’s been a terrible week, but also a beautiful one, because what happened to Pablo, it’s a miracle it’s not more serious. So we realized that it could have been a lot worse and we realized that it is our duty to play, to go on the field and give everything, especially for Pablo.”

Mari, a centre-back, has played in eight of Monza’s 11 Serie A games this season and scored the second goal in a 2-0 win over La Spezia this month. He spent the second half of last season on loan at another Italian club, Udinese.

Monza, owned by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, is in its debut season in the top division.
