Two people were killed and 10 were taken to the hospital in a major car crash Wednesday night on Chicago’s South Side, authorities said.
The crash happened at 5 p.m. at South Cottage Grove Avenue and East 87th Street, an intersection near the Chatham area. Paramedics needed at least 10 ambulances to respond to the crash, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said.
“Obviously high speed was involved, extremely high speed,” he said, adding that six vehicles were involved in the crash.
Two people died at the scene, Merritt said. The 10 people taken to hospital included four people in serious or critical condition.
“There were men, women and children, and they went to different hospitals,” Merritt said.
One car was overturned, and the other that caught fire was “a complete wreck,” Merritt said.
“It was unlike anything I’d ever seen before, and I’ve seen a lot of crashes,” he said.
