Search underway for suspect in shooting that left 3 dead, 2 injured

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WAVY) — Three people were killed and two were injured in a shooting on the University of Virginia campus Sunday night.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. on UVA’s campus, according to the university.

The UVA Police Department confirmed Monday morning that three people were killed and two were injured. Both victims were given medical care.

Police said the suspect is UVA student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., who is at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

According to the University, Jones was last seen wearing a burgundy jacket, blue jeans and red shoes and may have been driving a black SUV with the license plate number TWX3580.

The UVA Athletics website listed Jones as part of the varsity football team. According to the site, he did not play in a single game in 2018, but was on the roster. It was not immediately clear what his overall involvement with the team was.

It was also unclear if Jones is a current student at the university.

The University of Virginia Police Department worked with law enforcement to apprehend Jones.

All classes were canceled for Monday, and only designated important staff came to work. University Transportation suspended all academic routes Monday morning. Transportation officials said they would reassess their ability to operate in the afternoon.

UVA President Jim Ryan issued a statement early Monday morning said he was heartbroken after the shooting.

“We are working closely with the families of the victims and we will share more information as soon as we can,” Ryan said. “This is a message that any leader hopes to never send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia.”
