Apple doesn’t plan to release a new Mac until later this year
A new report suggests that Apple is abandoning its plan to release any new Mac models before the end of 2022. This update comes just minutes after we reported on a rumor claiming that the updated MacBook Pro lineup, slated to be announced later this year, was already postponed to 2023.
In addition to the updated MacBook Pro family, Apple is said to be planning to release a Mac mini and a Mac Pro
Even Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes the new Macs won’t debut until next year. He states the following in the free version of his “Power On” newsletter.
“Even though new Macs won’t debut until next year, the company still has software. The iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 updates, which began beta testing last week, should be released around mid-December.”
Gurman also says the Mac Pro is behind Apple’s launch schedule. When the company announced the M1 for the portable Mac series, the firm said that the transition to Apple Silicon would be completed in two years, but that did not happen.
“But the first Apple Silicon Mac Pro is clearly behind the timeline imposed by the company itself. After announcing the switch to homegrown chips in 2020, Apple said the move would take about two years. The updated Mac Pro coming out next year will clearly not have that schedule.”
We previously reported that the next generation of custom chips, including the M2 Pro and M2 Max, would be mass-produced on TSMC’s 3nm process, as Apple apparently placed a large order to its sole chip supplier. Unfortunately, producing high-quality wafers in quick succession is likely no easy task, meaning that Apple may not have enough inventory to mass-produce several million units for customers.
Hopefully, shipments will pick up in the first quarter of 2023 and we’ll see these chips and powerful Macs in action. The new MacBook Pro family was originally supposed to to arrive in Novemberbut there are some things that even Apple can’t control.
