Ducks beat Maple Leafs 4-3 in OT to end 7-game hitting streak | WGN 720 Radio
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Trevor Zegras scored his second goal of the game 2:15 into overtime and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Sunday night, snapping a seven-game losing streak.
Zegras scored the first of the Ducks’ two goals in the third period as Anaheim rallied from a 3-1 deficit. Jabob Silfverberg and Dmitriy Kulikov also scored for Anaheim, which has not won since its opener against Seattle.
“We’re starting to learn as a team to just stick with it and not get frustrated when things don’t go our way,” Kulikov said. “Eventually we’ll turn things around.”
John Gibson made 32 saves for the Ducks, including a point guard shot by Mitchell Marner seconds before Zegrasso’s win.
“It was very important that we understood that the guy next to you was not going to get us out of this; coach is not going to pull us out of it,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said, indicating the team met Saturday to address their struggles. “Every person in that room had to have some level of determination that we were going to go out there and do our job to the best of our ability.”
Auston Matthews, Denis Malgin and Kale Jarnkrok scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost four straight. Eric Kallgren made 35 saves for Toronto.
Kerfoot missed a penalty in the third when the puck flew over Gibson’s shoulder and over the crossbar.
“I’m just going to focus on what I can do here,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said when asked about his job security. “I got a job with the band. Our group has answered in the past. I thought we responded well here today.”
NOTES: The Maple Leafs finished their Western Conference sweep at 1-3-1. … The Ducks went 0-for-2 on the power play and are now 0-for-23 on the man advantage over their last eight games.
