Ex-officer Derek Chavin expected to survive prison wound: officials

(A hill) — Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd, is expected to survive a prison sentence, the Minnesota attorney general’s office said Saturday.

Chauvin was knife Friday at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona, the Associated Press first reported. As a result of the attack with a knife, he was seriously injured, reports AP.

A spokesman for the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office said Chauvin is expected to survive the attack, This is reported by NBC News.

On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) confirmed that a man was assaulted at a Tucson prison around 12:30 p.m. and was taken to medical facilities. BAP does not reveal the identity of the deceased.

Attorney Gregory Erickson, who represented Chauvin in the civil case, said neither he nor members of Chauvin’s family had been given any new information about his condition.

“As an outsider, I find this lack of communication with his attorneys and family members absolutely outrageous,” Erickson said in a statement. “This appears to indicate poor management of the facility and shows how Derek’s attack was allowed to happen.”

“While Derek’s family believe he is stable due to a third-party report (not direct contact), they understandably have doubts due to the lack of transparency that has permeated this ordeal,” he continued.

The AP reported that the Tuscon facility is notorious for security lapses and staffing issues.

Chauvin was sent to prison in August 2022 to serve a concurrent 21-year sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights and for second-degree murder.

The killing of Floyd in May 2020 sparked mass protests and retribution for police treatment of black people.

Supreme Court rejected appeal of Chauvin’s murder conviction last week.
