It can be cheaper to dine out on Thanksgiving
“Some Thanksgiving dishes at your favorite restaurant are closer to your home cooking,” says a new report
(KSNF/KODE) — For many families, Thanksgiving dinner is the equivalent of over-roasting a turkey or pouring gravy straight from the can. And most diners don’t serve your aunt’s famous broccoli rice casserole. But this year, the best way to eat out is to eat out for Thanksgiving.
New report published Wells Fargo suggests that your favorite Thanksgiving meals can cost you about as much at a restaurant as they would on your own. In accordance with Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for November 2021 shows that the cost of a meal at a regular restaurant is growing at a slower rate (5.79%) than at the local grocery store (9.81%). Closing that gap means that some of the dishes at your favorite restaurant are closer to the food you buy to eat at home.
“This narrowing of the gap means that some Thanksgiving meals at your favorite restaurant are closer to your meal at home, which can save you time and energy… In other words, you can spend about as much on a restaurant meal as you would on the cookout.” would be at home,” says the study.

For some staple foods, a Wells Fargo report noted a change in the prices of eggs by 32.5%, butter – by 25%. Fruits and vegetables, up 7.3%, have the lowest value growth in the Thanksgiving basket. The turkey, the star of the Thanksgiving dinner, is one of the biggest spending items, with prices projected to be 23% higher than this time last year. One of the reasons for the increase in turkey prices is the recent bird flu problems affecting the poultry industry.
“Dining out can be expensive, but this year it might be better than expected. Rising commodity prices affect grocery stores more directly than restaurants. The cost of a restaurant meal includes factors such as overhead and labor, but ingredients make up a smaller percentage of the restaurant’s total costs,” according to the Wells Fargo study.
