1 dead, 8 injured, 3 jailed in Florida shooting
At the same time, one person died and eight were injured “dozens and dozens of shots” were fired into a crowd gathered near the Florida State University campus on Saturday, October 29, according to the Tallahassee Police Department.
Three suspects were arrested, including one who was shot multiple times by police. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revel said at a press conference.
The identities of the dead and suspects have not been released. Injuries range from serious to non-life threatening, Revel said. All eight victims are expected to recover.
The shooting happened shortly before midnight as large crowds gathered in the city “for Florida A&M University’s homecoming and Florida State home football game“, the Associated Press reported. All of the victims were shot within a mile of Florida State’s Doak Campbell Stadium.
“Since the officers were in the area, several people in the crowd began shooting at Half Time Liquors, located at 2101 West Pensacola Street, and Los Compadres, located at 2102 West Pensacola Street, Revel said.
“Dozens and dozens of shots rang out … Officers ran towards this amazing amount of gunfire as it was happening. They assisted in the parking lot when it happened.”
Among the people police tried to help was a man shot outside Half Time Liquors. However, he died at the scene, police said.
Officers saw at least one person “shooting into a larger crowd” and a chase ensued along West Pensacola Street, officials said.
“Two officers … gave verbal commands for him to stop and drop his weapon,” Revel said. “(They) subsequently shot the subject in an attempt to end the threat and prevent further casualties. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken into custody.”
The gunman was wounded in the lower back, buttocks and hamstring, he said.
All three suspects have local ties, officials said.
“We’re still peeling back the layers, but obviously this is one big incident. Multiple locations (were) involved in this incident, but yes, we believe this is an isolated incident,” Revel said.
