Critics’ picks for which holiday shows to watch – Chicago Tribune

Good morning, Chicago.

More than a week after Election Day, Republicans secured 218th place it is necessary to free the House of Representatives from democratic control. The full extent of the party’s majority may not be known for several days – or weeks – as votes in competitive races are still being counted.

But they are well on their way to putting together what might be the narrowest party majority of the 21st century, rivaling 2001 when Republicans held just nine seats, 221-212 with two independents. That is far short of the landslide victory that Republicans had predicted in this year’s midterm elections, when the party hoped to reset the agenda on Capitol Hill by taking advantage of economic problems and Biden’s lagging popularity.

For Biden and the Democrats of the House of Representatives, the probability of staying in power was always slim. Since 1906, there have only been three midterm elections in which the president’s party in power won seats in the House of Representatives: in 1934 when the country was struggling with the Depression, in 1998 when the U.S. sustained a booming economy, and in 2002 , when President George W. Bush’s approval ratings skyrocketed amid a sense of national unity after the 9/11 attacks. See geographic visualization about how the balance of power has changed in the interim.

In Springfield, Republican state lawmakers elected new leaders after poor results in the elections, it allowed the Democrats to maintain a supermajority in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
