Judge finds Illinois woman fit to stand trial in death of 7-year-old son | Main stories

OREGON, Ill. (AP) — A judge on Thursday found a northern Illinois woman competent to stand trial in the death of her 7-year-old son.

An Ogle County judge ruled in the case of Sara Sofranek of Oregon, WREX-TV reports. She was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery in May 2021 for the death of Nathaniel Burton.

Court documents showed police responded to Sofranek’s home in February 2021 and found the boy not breathing. Further examination revealed that he also had a ruptured liver.

Sofranek’s case was postponed several times due to concerns about her health, including her eyesight.

A trial date for Safranek has not been set, the Ogle County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Oregon, Illinois is 100 miles west of Chicago.
