A veteran North Carolina firefighter and father of three has died after a long battle with cancer, fire officials and family say.

Robert Swink died Monday, Oct. 31, according to a news release from the Greensboro Fire Department, WGHP reports. Swink was a 26-year veteran firefighter, husband and father of three grown children.

“Of course I will miss my dad, but I promise continue your legacy and continue to be proud!” one of Swinko’s sons wrote in an Oct. 31 Facebook post.

The Greensboro Fire Department did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment.

According to WGHP, Swink’s career as a firefighter began in 1996 with the Guilford College Fire Department. He became an official member of the Greensboro Department in 2001.

At one time, Swink was at the department respected by all he worked with and always had a positive outlook, WFMY reported.

Swink was a “Great fireman and a devoted member of our family,” Greensboro Fire Chief Jim Robinson said in a release, according to WXLV. “We are hurting as a family today.”

One Facebook user shared that Swink was “a great man it will not be forgotten!”

“He was one of the best“, another wrote.

“He was not just a colleague, but a true friend“, – commented the third person.

Greensboro is about 90 miles northeast of Charlotte.
