Chicago businesses are gearing up for Small Business Saturday

CHICAGO — On a a day filled with shoppingmany people are finding ways to give to others while supporting their neighborhood businesses.

With Small Business Saturday just around the corner, the Chamber of Commerce said now is a great time to hit your local stores for some holiday shopping and dining.

Rob Lindley said he sees small purchases as a great way to show support for those who give back to the community.

“We want to know our customers, we want to know their kids,” said Lindley, a cashier and sales clerk at Hazel. “We have people who come every year. They come for festive decorations.”

Hazel has been a staple of the Ravenswood area for over 20 years. Elizabeth Kearney has moved out of the area but still comes back to shop.

“You know, they take care of the products they bring in, so you feel like you’re getting something good,” Kearney said.

She said there’s never a bad time to shop at a mom-and-pop store, no matter where you are.

“My father has been a small business owner since his 20s,” Kearney said. “So small business means a lot to me and my family.”

Neighborhood chambers of commerce across Chicago are gearing up for and celebrating Saturday’s small business specials.

“It’s Black Friday for small businesses,” said Rudy Flores, executive director of the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber said many businesses in the area will be offering deals or discounts, and some are hosting events such as photos with Santa.

“We have thousands of people coming out to Lincoln Square and Ravenswood because of the clustering of so many independent businesses,” Flores said.

After the pandemic forced many stores across the country to close their doors, Flores said he couldn’t encourage looking local.

“Getting out right now means more than ever,” he said.
