Mayor Lightfoot’s bodyguards thwart the robbery; the officer is injured

Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s security guards intervened during a robbery Tuesday morning and exchanged gunfire with the suspects, according to Chicago police. No one was hurt, but the officer suffered minor injuries.

Police said in a statement that around 7 a.m., officers assigned to a separate service unit saw a robbery that occurred in the 1800 block of North Monticello Avenue. Officers confronted several people, at least one of whom was armed, and exchanged gunfire, police said.

The suspects were able to flee the scene, and no weapons were found.

Tom Ahern, a spokesman for the police department, said the suspects are still at large, but police have a vehicle they left near the scene.

Ahern also said it was unclear how many people were involved in the robbery, but there were several.

There have been several armed robberies in the area, and detectives are looking for a possible connection, Ahern said.

The shooting is being investigated by the Office of Civilian Police Accountability, and the officers involved will be placed on normal administrative duties for 30 days, police said.
