Chicago Homicide Victims in 2023: Compared to Previous Years

There is information about the murders issued daily across the city of Chicago. The release of the names of the homicide victims has been delayed for two weeks to allow the victims’ families time to be notified of the deaths by Chicago police.

The homicide numbers do not include killings that occurred in self-defense or in other circumstances not accounted for in Chicago police statistics. Homicide data for the Illinois State Police, which patrol the city’s expressways, is also not included here.

After a two-year surge during the pandemic and national outrage over Chicago police accountability began to decline in homicides in 2022.

In 2021 797 people died — 25 more than in 2020.
