Cook County Announces $5.5 Million in Funding for Commuter Electric Vehicle Chargers

COOK COUNTY, IL — Cook County Council President Tony Preckwinkle announced Monday $5.5 million in funding to build more electric vehicle charging stations.

The funding will enable a four-year initiative to install up to 75 two-port public charging stations for electric vehicles.

Cook County said they cover the cost of EV station equipment, construction, installation, and network and warranty fees for the first five years.

“There are large gaps in access to public electric vehicle charging stations throughout Cook County’s suburbs, particularly in traditionally underserved communities in the south and west,” Preckwinkle said. “Bridging these access gaps gives more residents the opportunity to consider the economic benefits of electric vehicle ownership.”

Cook County is reaching out to municipal leaders, residents, business owners and community organizations to find the most suitable locations for community charging stations.
