Officials: Crews responded to a 2-alarm house fire | Main stories

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Two Decatur firefighters suffered minor injuries after responding to a two-alarm house fire.

According to the Decatur Fire Department, crews responded to the 1500 block of North Main Street at 9:40 a.m. Sunday morning for a report of a house fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a 2-story home with heavy fire in the rear of the home and smoke coming from the eaves.

Crews encountered a heavy fire in the back of the home, which had spread to the attic, and began extinguishing it.

According to the department, pile-up conditions hampered extinguishing and all crews were ordered to evacuate the home

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm and additional crews were brought in to extinguish the fire.

Fire officials said after the bulk of the fire was extinguished, crews safely entered the home and began removing the smoldering contents.

Firefighters found a dead domestic cat.

The State Fire Service was contacted for assistance in the investigation.

The agency reported that two firefighters received minor injuries.
