St. Ignatius varsity hockey team plays first game since JV team crashed

CHICAGO — The St. Ignatius varsity hockey team played their first game Thursday night after their classmates were injured in a bus accident.

Over the weekend, 16 members of the school’s junior varsity hockey team were injured when a semi-truck driver crashed into a bus in Indiana.

The team was returning to Chicago from the tournament.

As of Monday, two players were still in the hospital, while other players and coaches are still recovering.

While the junior varsity season has been suspended, coaches said it’s important for students to get back on the ice and get back to normal.

St. Ignatius and Mount Carmel prayed at center ice before the game, which ended in a 5-0 win for the Wolfpack.

St. Ignatius’ first home game since the wreck is Saturday.

An award ceremony for the JV team will take place beforehand. The game starts at 19:30 at the Fifth Third Arena.
