2 pedestrians killed when SUV crashes into Des Plaines building

Police are investigating a fatal car crash that killed two pedestrians Sunday afternoon in Des Plaines.

Shortly after 12:15 p.m. Sunday, a Honda SUV traveling east on Northwest Highway crossed into the westbound lanes, left the roadway and struck two pedestrians, an 80-year-old and a 42-year-old, and a building in the 400 block of Northwest Highway, according to police.

Both pedestrians were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where they died from their injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner. The 80-year-old woman was detained at 12:35, and the 42-year-old woman was detained at 12:45.

The police said that the driver of the SUV, a 71-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two children were in the van at the time of the accident, but neither was injured, according to police.

The Des Plaines Fire Department worked with Nicor ​​Gas to secure the area Sunday afternoon after police said the accident caused a gas leak in the building.

Police said they do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash at this time.
