EXCLUSIVE: Principal photography has begun on the WWII drama The boy in the forest, an adaptation of a war novel The Boy in the Woods: A True Story of World War II Survival Maxwell Smart.

The film is currently being shot in North Bay, Canada.

Rebecca Snow (Outwit Hitler: Surviving the Holocaust) writes and directs photos for Lumanity and JoBro Production. Myriad Pictures owns the rights worldwide (except Canada) and will market the film in the ASM.

Billed as a “true story of survival,” the film tells the story of Max, a Jewish boy who hides in the forests of Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe during World War II. Max is an aspiring artist who escapes death when his self-sacrificing mother tells him to run away from the Nazi trucks they are about to board. He befriends the heroic farmer Jasko and his family, who take him in. But due to increased pressure from the police and fear for the life of his own family, Jasko is forced to give up Max.

Struggling to survive alone in the scary and deadly forests of Eastern Europe, the synopsis continues, Max’s life changes when he meets another Jewish boy, Janek, and together they embark on an amazing adventure, escaping the Nazis and ultimately saving the life of an abandoned baby.

Masa Lisdek (Waiting room) will appear in the role of Kasia, Jaska’s wife. David Colesmith (Shazam) and Christopher Heyerdahl (Peacemaker) round out the key roles of Janek and leader Bagan.

Robert Boudreau and Jonathan Bronfman are producing and Andrew Bronfman is co-producing. Tina Smart and Maxwell Smart are executive producing alongside Patrick Patterson and Joel Reilly at Undisputed Pictures. Myriad’s Kirk D’Amico and Photon’s Mark Slone also serve as executive producers

Photon Films will release the film in Canada.

“Making this film has been a huge honor and a huge responsibility,” said Snow. “Watching Jett Cline and Richard Armitage bring these characters and this story to life is exciting. The world needs to hear these stories more than ever, and I am so grateful to have been a part of telling them.”
