Man who tried to set fire to Oak Brook movie theater gets 15 years in prison

WHEATON, Ill. — A DuPage County District Court judge has sentenced a Chicago man to 15 years in prison for trying to set fire to a suburban movie theater.

David Ferguson, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted aggravated arson in connection with the January 2018 incident at the AMC Oakbrook Center theater. Prosecutors said Ferguson was found inside the movie theater with a can of paint thinner on his lap.

As the manager was escorting Ferguson out of the theater, prosecutors said he took cigarettes and a lighter out of his pocket and tried to light them. Further investigation revealed that Ferguson had left paper towels soaked in paint thinner at the theater.

A judge ordered Ferguson, who is already in Cook County Jail on similar charges, to serve the sentences consecutively rather than concurrently based on his threat to public safety.
